Mandriva 2008.1 problemi di stallo

Salve a tutti,

premetto che è da circa 2 mesi che ho a che fare con un server Mandriva e prima di allora non avevo mai avuto a che fare con linux.

Sono passato da Mandriva 2007 alla versione Mandriva 2008.1 free e sembrava funzionare tutto bene anche se a volte aveva dei momenti in cui il sistema si rallentava.

Da un paio di giorni ho fatto l'aggiornamento e installato tutti i 200 pacchetti che erano selezionati.

Il problema è che ora dopo un po che utilizzo la macchina in remoto con putty mi succede che senza motivo mi si blocca e quindi mi tocca riavviare.

Io avevo provato a tenere sotto controllo la schermata dei processi (top) ma non riesco a trovare il perchè di questo problema.

Il server ha un processore AMD 64 x Dual Core 3800 + 2 gb di ram + 5 hd 500 GB. Come scheda video non so cosa c'e' montato su?

Dove posso vedere l'elenco hw montato su?

Che informazioni avete bisogno per aiutarmi?

Per vedere l'hardware installato installa il pacchetto lshw e poi poi dai il comando lshw > hw.txt

Esattamente che servizi stanno girando su quella macchina??

Beh non è che di questo file noi ce ne possiamo fare molto.

Per sapere i servizi avviati al boot dai

ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc3.d

se parti in modalità testo o

ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc5.d

se parti in modalità grafica

Amministrare un server è un compito alquanto complesso, specialmente se ci sono problemi, ed un certo studio di come funziona Linux è indispensabile.

Hai perfettamente ragione sullo studio di linux difatti sto cercando di imparare più cose possibili sia con l'aiuto del web, manuali che con l'aiuto di persone come voi.

Non esiste un log di sistema che è possibile visualizzare quando il sistema si blocca?

Ma scusa se questa macchina è un server come mai lo avvii in modalità grafica

Mi spieghi che mestieri fa questo server??
Sicuramente non è un server web dato che non ha httpd c'è il server SQL postgresql , il classico sshd e samba.

E' una macchina destinata ad elaborare ed encodare audio/video principalmente quindi ha sotto una serie di script che eseguono questi compiti e si interfacciano ad un db postgres. Tutto qua. Diciamo che la sua funzione di server la fa solo con me perchè sono l'unico che ci accede.
