io dalla disperazione ho lasciato perdere quella ciofeca di Ubuntu e ho provato con Mandriva [essendo certo che anche nelle altre distro principali c'erano problemi con le SPU integrate in piattaforme Intel).
Be' sono ancora profano di questi S.O. ma con della buona lena [forse l'esperienza end-user acquisita su win è servita a qualcosa] sono riuscito a farlo funzionare !!! Grazie 2008.1 Spring 
Come ho fatto ? Sbadatamente avevo lasciato l'audio integrato disabilitato da bios e avevo già avviato l'installazione dal Free DVD (con Ubuntu utilizzavo un cimelio di Sound Blaster PCI), poi quando me ne sono accorto ho pensato: vabbe' prima sistemiamo i pacchetti dei gestori audio e lo riattivo tanto ormai...
Kernel installato: 2.6.24.4 desktop i686 (anche con il .5 non cambia 
)
disinstallati TUTTI i pacchetti relativi a Pulseaudio tranne i 2 "principali" (va a ricordarsi il nome, sul notebook -da cui sto scrivendo- ho Vista, il pc in questione è quello dei miei)
POI ho installato ALSA compreso il modulo rpm per il kernel
Riavvio, abilito l'audio, funziona! Il volume è un po' basso ma missione riuscita! Vado di alsaconfig e voilà, è perfetto. Codec: IDT/Sigmatel 9221
Spero sia stato di aiuto. 
nota dolente: uso un GMA950 integrato e non vuole funzionare nessun effetto video (manco gli 85hz a 1024 su un vetusto crt 17"). Aprirò una nuova discussione al riguardo o vedrò se ne esistono altre attinenti.

ma purtroppo non è servito a nulla. Ho anche provato a lanciare alsaconf che gira e alla fine mi dice che tutto è configurato bene.. ma in realtà non si sente nulla.
